Rajat Patidar & Ruturaj Gaikwad Shortlisted for India ODI Squad vs West Indies

As Team India continues its strategic roadmap toward the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, the national selectors are faced with a unique scheduling puzzle. With the 2026 Asian Games directly colliding with the home ODI series against the West Indies, several core white-ball stars will be away on national duty in Japan.

This dual-squad requirement has opened a golden window of opportunity for two of domestic and franchise cricket's premier performers: Ruturaj Gaikwad and two-time IPL-winning captain Rajat Patidar.

Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the squad dynamics, middle-order vacancies, and what to expect as India prepares to host the Caribbean side across three crucial 50-over encounters.

The Asian Games Clash: Why Iyer and Tilak Are Unavailable

The three-match ODI series between India and the West Indies kicks off on September 27, 2026. However, the series runs simultaneously with the knockout stages of the Asian Games cricket tournament.

• T20I Squad Duty: Shreyas Iyer has been named captain of the Indian T20I team competing in the Asian Games, with dynamic left-hander Tilak Varma serving as his vice-captain.

• Knockout Overlap: India’s Asian Games campaign begins with a quarterfinal clash on September 28. With India expected to reach the medal matches, both Iyer and Tilak will be in action through the semifinals (October 1) and final (October 3).

• The Middle-Order Void: The absence of Iyer—India's established No. 4 in ODIs—and middle-order engine Tilak Varma leaves two critical middle-order slots vacant in Shubman Gill’s ODI squad.

Ruturaj at No. 4, Patidar Waiting in the Wings

To fill the middle-order void, national selectors have turned to proven top-order depth and form batters.

1. Ruturaj Gaikwad Set for No. 4 Role

Ruturaj Gaikwad is the frontrunner to slot directly into the playing XI at number four against the West Indies. Known for his technical composure and ability to build long innings, Gaikwad’s adaptability makes him the ideal tactical replacement for Shreyas Iyer during this home series.

2. Rajat Patidar Earns Recall Consideration

Rajat Patidar, who famously led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to back-to-back IPL titles, is also back in national team discussions. Ahead of his appearance for India A against Australia A, Patidar has been shortlisted as middle-order cover and primary backup for Gaikwad. His ability to dominate spin in the middle overs gives India’s reserves immense firepower.

A Closer Look: Rajat Patidar's 50-Over Record

While Patidar is widely celebrated for his explosive T20 leadership and strokeplay, his foundation in 50-over cricket is equally impressive. Having made his single ODI appearance against South Africa in December 2023, his List-A numbers highlight a player ready for the big stage.
